Art at Restaurant Haerlin

The famous Nymphenburg porcelain figures (Spring, Summer, Fall, Winter) dating back to 1919 are part of the restaurant since it first opened its doors. The figures are now perfectly displayed in specially-made glass cases and take pride of place in the restaurant's decorative scheme.

Restaurant Haerlin features a chandelier made from more than 20,000 black and white crystals threaded on 1,000 separate cords and weighting over 250 kilograms. Designed by Vera Soukupová and specially manufactured in Prague by the well-known firm Lasvit, it bathes the restaurant in a warm, cozy light.

Restaurant Haerlin remains passionate about both outstanding food and contemporary art. After the renovation, the re-opening was celebrated with a display of engravings by Hamburg-based artist Wolfgang Werkmeister, born 1941. The Northern German landscapes make a sophisticated contribution to the Haerlin's decorations and emphasize Hotel Vier Jahreszeiten's strong ties to the local area. Werkmeister's artworks are a dialogue between originality, precision and the poetry of the region. They create a memorable impression.

Werkmeister is a leading contemporary engraver, often mentioned in the same breath as his great predecessors Liebermann, Nolde and Anders Zorn. He has carved himself a unique place in the Hamburg artistic scene, never being distracted by fashions or trends. His masterpieces are found in the Hamburg Kunsthalle, Altona Museum, Gottorf Castle and the Staatsgalerie Stuttgart.

Werkmeister is strongly committed to the visible reality and radical nature of the contrast between black and white. His engravings feature an expressive counterpoint between light and dark, graphical structures and fine shades of gray as they trace the unadorned simplicity of the coastal region. Meticulous craftsmanship, creativity and consistency underpin the art of Wolfgang Werkmeister – the same values that lie at the heart of Restaurant Haerlin.
